Purdue university 2012 application essay

The field of optical microscopy is poised for a revolution with rapid advances in ultrafast imaging methods converging with equally rapid reductions in ultrafast femtosecond laser costs and improved stability. New interactions between light and matter arise in intense optical fields generated from ultrafast lasers, enabling new mechanisms of image contrast based on harmonics generation, coherent Raman scattering, transient absorption and others. Novel nonlinear optical (NLO) microscopes have allowed entirely new modes of imaging in studies of living cells and organisms. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers in different areas of the NLO imaging community to present frontiers and challenges in the field, and to provide a platform for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty to learn NLO imaging through lab practice.
